This Week in Reading. . .
We will be working on a few short stories this for the next few weeks before we begin our next novel. The story we will read this week is Tomas and the Library Lady by Pat Mora and illustrated by Raul Colon.
Some relationships are so special they have the power to change lives forever. Tomás, the son of migrant workers, spends long, hot days in the fields harvesting crops. But when he meets a kind librarian, she helps him find escape from the heat in the form of thousands of books. Soon his imagination takes off and Tomás discovers a surprising world filled with dinosaurs, tigers, and limitless possibilities.
This is a story with both Spanish and English based on the inspiring true story of Mexican-American author and educator, Tomás Rivera.
As we enjoy this Realistic Fiction Text, we also will learn a bit about Migrant workers here in the United States.
We will have a Comprehension/Vocabulary Test on Friday.

Study Guide:
- The hemisphere farthest from the sun receives the least amount of light and warmth. (Fall/Winter)
- The hemisphere closest to the sun receives the most light and warmth.(Spring/Summer)
- The Earth spins on it’s axis and is tilted at an angle.
- As the Earth makes its orbit, or path, different hemispheres are closest or farthest from the sun creating different seasons.
- Seasons are caused by the Earth’s orbit/revolutions and tilt.
- One Orbit/revolution of the Earth around the sun takes approximately 365 days or 1 year.
- The Earth orbits/revolves around the sun, and the moon orbits/revolves around the Earth.
- One Earth orbit/revolution equals one year, which includes four seasons.
- As the Earth rotates different parts of the world face the sun, which gives us day and night.
- The Earth’s rotation causes day and night.
- One rotation equals one day/24 hours.
- Earth orbits the Sun once a year. The moon orbits the Earth about 13 times a year.
- Sunrise: Once every 24 hours.
- Full Moon: Once every 28/29 days
- Solar Eclipse: Once every two years.
- It takes the moon about 29 days to complete a lunar cycle.
- Waxing means the moon’s illuminated area is increasing.
- Waning means a smaller part of the moon’s visible surface is illuminated, so that it appears to decrease in size.
